Local Sustainability European Good Practice Information System

Nothing teaches more than to understand a local problem in another context.

Welcome to "Local Sustainability," the European Good Practice Information Service. This guide to sustainable good practice was developed in 1996, and operated by the EURONET / ICLEI Consortium and has been developed with the financial support of the European Commission, Directorate General XI for Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection. The entry of new cases was stopped in 1999.

'Local Sustainability' has been conceived and developed as a service of many partners, disseminating and making accessible the good practice experiences of European cities, towns, counties and their associations, national and regional governments, research and educational institutions, and Directorate Generals of the European Commission.

Through ICLEI's role as the world wide Thematic Centre for "Local Sustainable Development and Environmental Management" within the framework of the UN-Habitat Best Practices Initiative, Local Sustainability will serve as the European arm of ICLEI's Information Clearinghouse network.

'Local Sustainability' was launched at the Second European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in Lisbon, Portugal on 6 October 1996. There, the European Good Practice Information Service received the endorsement of the European Commission.

Acknowledgements

The EURONET / ICLEI Consortium would like to express their thanks to the European Union's Expert Group on the Urban Environment, which consists of experts from all Member States of the European Union and is chaired by Professor Colin Fudge. The Expert Group's working programme includes the production of a policy report on European Sustainable Cities and Summary Documents aimed at specific target groups. The objective of the "Local Sustainability" European Good Practice Information System is to support the dissemination of the key messages developed by the Expert Group, and to facilitate the transfer of policy into action in the field of urban sustainability. The EURONET/ICLEI consortium would also like to thank the organisations that have provided much of the original material for the case descriptions (indicated on the cases), and, especially, the Urban Environment Unit of DG XI, which has constructively supported the development of the system.
